The increasing demand for psychiatric nurses in all areas of health delivery services, coupled with the acute shortage of psychiatrists, makes it increasingly important to ensure that the psychiatric nurse is equipped to meet the demands placed on her. If psychiatric nurses expect recognition as therapists in their own right they will have to prove their competence; they can only attain this potential if they feel comfortable and secure in the psychiatric service.
