Preparation and Properties of Diol Functionalized Epoxidized Natural Rubber
Abstract:
Diol functionalized epoxidized natural rubber (diol-f-ENR) was carried out based on epoxidized natural rubber containing 25 mol % of epoxide group (ENR-25) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with the presence of acetic acid and deionize water. Reaction was performed using a molar ratio [formic aci/[epoxid and [deionized wate/[epoxid =1 and 10, respectively at temperature of 60±1 oC for 24 h. It was found that amount of epoxide groups converted to diols increased with increasing reaction time, and up to 11.8 mol % of diols unit at reaction time for 24 h. Glass transition temperature (Tg) shifted toward high temperature of-45 oC,-40.1, -32.3 oC and-23.2 oC with increasing of diols level from 0, 4.2, 6.9 and 11.8 mol %, respectively. For thermal stability, it was found that the temperature of maximum weight loss rate (Tmax) of diol-f- ENR was higher than that of ENR-25 indicating the thermal enhancing effect of polar group (i.e., diols). The effect of the diol content (i.e., 4.2, 6.9 and 11.8 mol %) on lap shear strength test of glass sheet specimens showed that the adhesive strength increased from 0.18-0.35 MPa with increasing of diol content.
