This theoretical paper delves into key competencies and processes (contents-activities) of social studies to support students’preparation for the transition to a preferable future. The author discusses the following point. First, social studies must transform into a practical subject which is focused on cultivating key competencies in critical thinking, esthetics, systemic analysis, and strategic thinking as cognitive and affective competencies. Combined with a strong identity and sense of place, the new focus will build towards competency in civic pursuits regarding freedom as non-domination, social reciprocity, and practical competency seeking environmental justice and social equity. Second, in order to promote a democratic civil society and a just transition, the moral and social studies curriculum must reorganize their contents into political ecology, economic geography, cultural history, and social ethics. The overall outcome would be to unify ‘social studies as a common subject’ through interdisciplinary perspectives, including civics responsibility, moral judgement, historical and environmental geography. Third, during processes for transitions to a social studies classroom for justice and equity, students will engage in key concepts such as climate justice, and attachment to place, among several content conceptualizations shown in Figure 4. Fourth, key processes will permit students to transition through systemic principles of learning (analysis and expectation→ comparison and relation→ discussion and change→ planning, action, and reflection).
