Images of cultures of transport and infrastructure in South America, c. 1890-1930

Abstract

This article offers a panoramic view on the visual (re-) presentations of traffic, transport, and infrastructure in South America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries. The motives are classified y interpreted considering the discourses and visual contexts of the epoch. In addition to images of trains and stations, which are for sure the most prominent, views of ports, aerial views and views of urban and state infrastructure are presented. These images showed South America’s modernity and proved that the continent was not underdeveloped and backward.
