레트로(Retro)란 단순한 형태적 재현, 차용이 아닌 창조성과 소비자의 정서적 공감대를 연결하는 감성적 매개물로 간주된다. 20여년 지속된 한국의 레트로 유행 속에서, 수년간 많은 서체 디자이너들과 서체 회사도 과거 문화를 배경으로 한 레트로 한글 서체 개발에 집중하였고, 기업들도 마케팅의 일환으로 레트로 한글 서체를 선보였다. 한국의 레트로 문화와 함께 꾸준히 발전해 온 레트로 한글 서체는 이미 한글 서체 디자인 흐름에 큰 영역을 차지하고 있다.
본 연구는 1990년대 이후부터 오늘날까지 한국 레트로 문화 속 한글 서체에 나타난 조형적 특성 표본을 만들고, 레트로 한글 서체가 갖는 공통적 조형성 몇 가지를 도출하였다. 과정은 문헌 조사를 기반으로 레트로 문화의 주 수용자와 재현 시기의 변화에 따른 진화하는 한국의 레트로 계보와 사회적 현상을 분석한다. 사례조사를 통하여 1990-2020년대까지 레트로 한글 서체들을 년도 별로 분류하여 시체가 가지는 형태적 세부 특성을 분석한다. 그 결과 레트로 한글 서체에서 가장 많이 볼 수 있는 표현 방식으로 서체의 줄기가 네모 틀을 빡빡하게 채우는 꽉 찬 모듈과 줄기의 가로획과 세로획의 극적인 굵기 대비는 가장 많이 나타난 전형적인 레트로 한글 서체의 특징으로 드러났다. 이는 강한 임팩트로 주목성을 높여준다는 장점과 동시에 레트로 한글 서체의 쓰임과 형태적 다양화의 한계점을 드러내기도 했다. 이 표본은 진화하는 한국의 레트로 문화에 맞춰 레트로 한글 서체의 지속적인 연구 기반이 되고자 한다.

Retro is regarded as an emotional medium that connects creativity and consumer’s emotional consensus rather than simple form representation and borrowing. Throughout the twenty-year-old retro trend in Korea, many typeface designers and font companies have focused on developing retro Korean fonts based on past cultures, and companies also introduced retro Korean fonts as part of their marketing. Retro Korean fonts which have steadily developed along with the retro culture present in Korea have largely occupied the flow of Korean font design.
This study produced a sample of the formative characteristics of the Hangeul Fonts in the Korean retro culture from the 1990s to the present day, and derived some common forms of the Hangeul Fonts in the Korean retro culture. The process analyzed the evolving Korean retro genealogy and social phenomena according to changes in the main audiences of retro culture and the time of reproduction based on literature research. Through a case study, retro Korean fonts from the 1990s to the 2020s were classified by year to interpret the detailed characteristics of the form. As a result, the most common characteristic of retro styled Hangeul fonts turned out to be a full module with a string of typefaces that tightens the square and the contrast of dramatic thickness between the horizontal and vertical plots of a stem. Although this form has the advantage of enhancing attention with its strong impact, it has also revealed limitations in the use of retro Hangeul fonts and the diversification of forms today. The sample studied is intended to serve as the basis for continuous research of retro Hangeul fonts in line with the evolving retro culture of Korea.
