Introduction

Optical Mineralogy (OM) has long been used, to great effect, in the solution of particular issues related to the provenance of ceramic and clay artifacts. Recent work has added a focus on technology to that of provenance, identifying materials added to the ceramic matrix and commenting on their possible function. The analysis presented here, part of a larger study of 4th and 3rd millennia pottery belonging to the Kura-Araxes tradition, joins this trend, attempting to characterize a site assemblage in terms of specific provenance, treatment of materials, ceramic techniques and technological behavior. This is effected by broad sampling, experimental work with raw materials, and the integration of observations on technique at the macro-and micro-scale. The subject of the study is a localized ceramic industry at the isolated early Kura-Araxes site of Tsaghkasar, Armenia (fig. 1). The Kura-Araxes (or Early Transcaucasian) phenomenon of the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE has long been recognized as one of the most extensive and intriguing examples of cultural expansion in the Bronze Age world. Emerging in the early or mid-4th millennium from a ‘ core’ area in the South Caucasus
