Action representation in paired objects

We investigated whether the motor system is sensitive to the familiarity and plausibility of interactions between objects and whether these prime action decisions to verbs. We presented participants with pairs of objects that positioned correctly for action that were either familiar as a pair, unfamiliar as a pair but plausible for action or unrelated as a pair. Behaviourally, we observed that explicit judgments performed on the verbs were affected by the preceding object-pair type. fMRI data revealed that activity in the SMA reflected the familiarity and plausibility of using pair of objects together, with higher responses to familiar pairs. Left pre-motor cortex showed an interaction between the action verb and the pair type, with large responses to action verbs that were primed by action-appropriate object pairs. Finally an opposite pattern was observed in early visual cortex with reduced response to action verbs that were preceded by the correct object pairs. Our findings suggest that the perception of typically interacting objects afford actions through responses in motor associated cortex.
