The radiological findings of pulmonary paragonimiasis

    Abstract

    Authors analysed chest X-ray findings in 36 cases of proven pulmonary paragonimiasis which sputum smears werepositive for ova of Paragonimus Westermani from October 1978 to January 1987 at Chonbuk National UniversityHospital, PMC and Korean Institute of tuberculosis. The results are as follows: 1. Roentgenographic findings arecyst formation, puomonary infiltration, fibrosis, pleural thickening, pleural effusion and pneumothorax. 2. Thecharacteristic cystic shadows were observed in 19 cases(58%). They were multiple aggregated cysts surrounded withpericystic haziness and ranged in size from 1cm to 4cm in diameter. 3. Pulmonary infiltrations showed multiple,variable ill defined area of consolidation, predominantly inperiphery of mid and lower lung field, which hasmigratory tendency. 4. Distributions of pulmonary lesions were bilateral (72%), mid lung fields(56%), and therewere tendency of peripheral lung predominence. 5. 4 cases(11%) showed normal chest X-ray findings.
