A Comparison Study on the Characterization of Bubbles Formed in a Ladle and a Continuous Casting Mold During Gas Injection Using Advanced Imaging Techniques

Gas injection in steelmaking vessels has multi-fold benefits. Bubbles inside these vessels influence steel processing and quality. Bubble visualization and characterization are required to generate fundamental knowledge related to steel-gas interactions. To estimate and compare bubble size distributions (BSD), physical modeling was performed at the University of Toronto in a 1:8-scale caster mold and 1:30-scale ladle using advanced imaging techniques with a speed-sense camera. Effect of physical properties, such as surface tension and viscosity on BSD, was examined using dimensional analysis by utilizing different simulating liquids. Single-scale characterization was employed to achieve BSD correlations with operating variables and liquid properties.
