Analysis of Market Effects on Changes in Corporate Name : Focusing on the IT Industry

This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of the market by analyzing the effect of the company name change, focusing on whether the company remains listed after the company name change in the information technology industry. In addition, the purpose of this study is to analyze the differences in long-term and short-term market responses according to whether to change to IT-related names. The results of this study are as follows. First, corporate name changes in the IT industry have a positive effect on corporate value, and listed firms have a higher mean cumulative abnormal return(MCAR) than delisted firms. Second, in the IT industry, the long-term effect of changing the company name is relatively high compared to the short-term effect. Third, changing the corporate name to an IT-related name lowers the corporate value, but changing the corporate name to an IT-unrelated name increases the corporate value. By drawing implications through these conclusions, this study will contribute from an academic and practical perspective as well as investors.

본 연구는 정보기술산업에 있어서 기업명변경 후 상장유지여부를 중심으로 기업명 변경에 따른 효과를 분석하여 시장의 효율성을 평가하고자 한다. 또한 IT 관련 명칭으로의 변경 여부에 따른 장・단기 시장반응의 차 이를 분석하고자 한다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, IT산업에서 기업변경은 기업가치 및 주주에게 긍정적인 영 향을 주고 있었으며, 상장유지기업이 상장폐지기업에 비하여 평균누적초과수익률이 높았다. 둘째, IT 산업에서 기 업명 변경은 장기효과가 단기효과에 비하여 상대적으로 높았다. 셋째, 기업명을 IT 관련 명칭으로 변경하는 경우 기업의 가치가 하락하였으나, IT 비관련 명칭으로 변경하는 경우에는 기업가치가 높아졌다. 이러한 결론들을 통하 여 시사점을 도출함으로써 본 연구는 투자자는 물론 학계 및 실무적인 관점에서 기여하고자 한다.

These exchanges have led to the founding of the International Next-generation Convergence technology (INCA) on December 1, 2015. INCA was registered as an incorporated association under the Ministry of Information and Communications. The main purpose of the organization is to improve our society by achieving the highest capability possible in next generation convergence technology.
