The State and Its Citizens: Managing People, Resources, and the Land in the post-Soviet Milieu

2024-06-08

Call for papers for a special issue in the Bulletin of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. Historical Sciences. Philosophy. Religious Studies Series.

Previously defined as societies in transition, the post-Soviet successor states have demonstrated remarkable resilience.  On the one hand, they succeeded at becoming functional members of the global community of the nation-states while, on the other hand, they preserved the congenital approaches and practices developed in the former USSR.  This special issue will address this situation in the post-transition societies, but as opposed to treating it as a mix of continuity and change, the contributions explore the possibilities of social and political hybridity as the principal form of life that defines our world.  The issue at stake here is the relationship between the state and its citizens: we ask how do states and societies navigate a complex terrain of life in the post-totalitarian and post-nuclear world that is driven by the push for development, modernization, and economic growth as well as climate anxiety.  We invite paper that address this issue from a variety of angles by examining different aspects of social, political, and economic life, such as power in the age of neoliberalism, democratization, indigeneity and displacement, fine arts, and science.  How does the hybridity of social and political forms is conceptualized and exercised by the local actors and the states and to what ends?  Approaching the social and political lives of the respective societies from the ethnographic perspective, the contributors to this special issue are encouraged to address the questions, seeking to contribute to the ongoing debates in anthropology, history, political science, and other disciplines.
