The paper describes the nursing experience of caring for a neonate with Patau syndrome. The mother and their family were in face of multiple abnormalities presented in the child which resulted in an inadequate parent-child attachment relationship. The nursing period was from August 9 to 30, 2014. The author used holistic assessment and collected the information about the case and primary caregivers based on a good relationship with the case's parents. The identified health problems were: an ineffective airway clearance, role distress of the caregivers and a risk of impairment in attachment. The author applied family center model to assist the parents in building a good parent-child attachment and enhance the parents to participate in the care of the child. The author also provided information regarding neonatal hospice care to encourage and assist the parents to understand the sadness and then accept the possible loss of child's for the aim of emotional adjustment if needed.
