Abstract

The frequency of Heroin and LSD related crimes began to increase in 1971. It reached a peak of 259 cases in 1973, and then gradually decreased in subsequent years. Marijuana related crimes first occurred in 1968. There were 73 cases in 1972. This increased to 162 by 1978. The frequency of marijuana crimes had a strong positive correlation with the number of U. S. servicemen in Okinawa. Heroin dependence was first observed in 1972 with 36 cases, reached a peak in 1973 with 54 cases and then gradually decreased to six cases in 1976. Most of the drug dependence cases including the author's clinical cases involved juvenile bar hostesses who were either in contact with or had cohabited with U. S. servicemen. The types of drugs, and the motivation and distribution in dependence resembled the United States pattern and had a strong correlation with the Vietnam War.
