Abstract (Englisch):Various attempts have been made to explain interindividual differences in musical taste, attitudes, and behavior. In German empirical studies through - out the last two decades, a sociostructural theory of socialisation has often been applied. According to this, "social stratum" has been used as an independent variable in empirical research. The operational definitions of this variable, however, turn out to be an arbitrary reduction of the theoretical construct and its underlying assumptions. Furthermore, the general model of socialisation theory has been reduced, and its components have been isolated from the original frame of reference. These lacks involve a loss of explanatory value, and for this reason theory building has been neglected in this area, and available data can hardly be compared and interpreted. A transfer of an "ecological theory of socialisation" (according to U. Bronfenbrenner) could help to avoid or resolve these problems. An analysis of the ecology of individuals is concerned with the reciprocal process of adaptation of an individual to his environment, and the patterns of environmental structures, described in terms of overlapping systems. The transfer of this approach affects theory building as well as empirical research programs. It can contribute to considerate environmental aspects which unwarrantedly may have been regarded as but which could turn out to be relevant, und to improve knowledge about interactions between factors by which music education is influenced. Different kinds of sampling, of field research, of survey techniques, and of data analysis are to be applied. Yet unconnected theoretical fragments - referring either to family or school, or peer groups, or mass media - can be integrated in multicausal explanations which probably are more adequate to reality.
