이 글은 한국 반핵운동의 선구자로 간주되는 문학자 표문태(表文台, 1914‒2007)의 반핵 활동이 갖는 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 희곡, 수필, 소설을 쓴 표문태는 1970‒1980년대에 반핵 운동을 했다. 표문태는 작가로서도 반핵운동가로서도 사실상 거의 알려져 있지 않다. 표문태는 문학지에 거의 작품을 발표하지 않고 문단의 이방인의 위치에서 작가 활동을 하며 다양한 사회운동을 했다. 1980년대까지 활발하게 사회참여를 실천한 표문태는 1970년 랠프 E 랩의 『핵전쟁』을 번역 출간했고, 1987년 두 권의 핵 관련 서적을 편저했다. 요컨대 핵이 한국에서 거의 조명 받지 않던 시기에 이 선구자는 어떤 점을 공론화하기 위해 노력하고 기록을 남겼을까. 표문태가 포착한 핵 위험의 내용과, 그 목소리를 공론화하는 전략, 반핵의 의미를 구명(究明)해 본다.
This article examines the meaning of anti‒nuclear activities of Pyo Mun‒tae (1914‒2007), litterateur regarded as a pioneer of the Korean anti‒nuclear movement. Pyo Mun‒tae, who wrote plays, essays and novels, staged an anti‒nuclear campaign in the 1970s and 1980s. Pyo Mun‒tae is virtually unknown as a writer and anti‒nuclear activist. Pyo Mun‒tae rarely published his works in literary magazines, and worked as a writer in the literary world as a stranger, engaging in various social movements. Pyo Mun‒tae, who actively practiced social participation until the 1980s, translated and published Ralph Eugene Lapp’s Kill and Overkill in 1970 and published two nuclear‒related books in 1987. In short, at a time when nuclear weapons were hardly lighting rod in Korea, what did the pioneer strive to publicize and record? I will figure out the contents of the nuclear danger detected by Pyo Mun‒tae, the strategy of publicizing its voice, and the meaning of anti‒nuclear.
