본 연구는 설인귀 풍속신앙 전설의 금기구조와 서사구조적인 특징 및 전승양상의 역사적인 맥락과 향유의식을 규명해 내고자 했다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 궁극적으로 설인귀와 관련된 한국 고ㆍ당 전쟁문학의 향유의식에 관한 기존 연구 속에서 규명되지 않았던 과제, 즉 중국 인물인 설인귀를 주인공으로 한 한국 고ㆍ당 전쟁문학이 오랜 기간 동안 널리 향유될 수 있었던 이유를 밝혀보고자 하였다.설인귀 풍속신앙 전설은 감악산 설인귀비 유래담으로 존재하며, 그 서사구조는 두 가지 패턴으로 나타난다. 하나는 제향의 요구와 징치의 패턴이고, 다른 하나는 접촉 금기와 징벌의 패턴이다. 제향과 공양을 요구하는 패턴이든 사당ㆍ비석ㆍ공물에 접촉을 금지하는 패턴이든 모두 신격이 인간과의 상호작용 속에서 일정하게 제한하는 전제 사항이 있고, 이를 어겼을 경우에 징벌을 내리는 금기의 서사로 구조화 되어 있다는 점이 특징이다. 설인귀 풍속신앙 전설은 고ㆍ당 전쟁을 중심으로 한 고구려, 당나라, 신라의 역학관계와 대내적으로는 한반도 내부의 왕조 교체에 따른 중앙정부의 정치ㆍ행정ㆍ종교적인 지배구조의 변동에 따라 일정한 변이과정을 보여주며, 그 역사적인 변동은 세 단계로 나타난다. 설인귀 풍속신앙 전설의 향유의식을 두 가지 측면에서 규명했다. 첫째는 어떤 맥락에서 중국의 역사적인 인물이 경기도 파주 지역의 대표적인 지역 전설의 하나로 전승되게 되었는가 하는 향유 양상의 역사적인 배경과 관련된 문제이다. 둘째는 중국의 역사적인 인물인 설인귀가 경기도 파주 지역의 풍속신앙 전설 향유층에게 지니는 의미는 무엇인가 하는 문제이다.
This paper is the study on the narrative characteristics of the Seolingui religious legend and the dimension changing historically of the transmission. The Seolingui religious legend is being as the region legend in the Paju. The first, the narrative characteristics of the Seolingui religious legend appears as the taboo-construction of religious customs. Seolingui legend about religious customs exsists as what explains the origin of the Seolingui's monument in Gamac-mountain and that narrative structure appears as two patterns. The one is pattern demandind a sacrificial rite, the other is pattern of correction. The dimension of historical change that the Seolingui religious legend has been transmitted from generation to generation can explain as three stages. In the interior of a country, it is connected with the fluctuation of political·administrational·religious hegemony followed by that the dynasty is alternated. On the other hand, in the outerior of a country, it is associated with the dynamic relationships among Koguryo, Dang and Shilla in the focus of the Koguryo and Dang war.
