기업역량과 외부협력이 벤처기업 조기 국제화에 미치는 영향 : 창업자 관련 산업 경험의 조절 효과

본 연구는 벤처기업의 기업역량, 외부협력 및 창업자의 관련 산업 경험이 조기 국제화에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 벤처기업 조기 국제화에 관한 기존 연구는 기술, 네트워크, 마케팅과 같이 다양한 기업역량의 영향에 대해 살펴봤으며 기업역량이 부족한 경우 외부협력을 통해 보완할 수 있음을 보여준다. 그러나 외부협력은 상당한 비용과 노력이 수반되고 협력 파트너의 기회주의적 행동에 노출되기 때문에 외부협력을 통해 기대한 성과를 이루기 쉽지 않다. 이에 본 연구는 어떤 경우에 벤처기업이 조기 국제화 과정에 외부협력을 효과적으로 활용 할 수 있는지 살펴본다. 세부적으로는 창업자의 창업 이전 관련 산업 경험의 조절 효과를 살펴본다. 창업자는 창업이전 관련 산업 경험을 통해 필요한 인적 네트워크와 지식을 쌓기 때문이다. 본 연구는 실증을 위해 중소벤처기업부의 벤처기업정밀실태조사 2016년부터 2018년까지의 3개년 자료를 병합하여 이 중 창업 초기 단계 벤처기업 1,065개를 분석한다. 연구결과, 벤처기업의 기업역량 수준은 조기 국제화에 양의 영향을 주고 있으나, 벤처기업의 외부협력 범위가 커질수록 기업역량 수준과 조기 국제화 가능성 간의 관계가 약화되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 창업자의 창업 이전 관련 산업 경험이 많은 경우 외부협력과 기업역량 수준 간의 음의 상호작용 효과는 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 벤처기업 조기 국제화에 대한 이론적 및 실무적 시사점을 제시한다.

Extant studies on internationalization in the early stages of ventures have investigated the impact of various firm competences such as technology, network, and marketing, and show that if firm competences are insufficient, external collaboration can be used to compensate for the ventures" early internationalization. However, external collaboration entails considerable cost and effort as it exposes to the opportunistic behavior of the partner. Therefore, this study examines the cases in which external collaboration can be effectively performed. Specifically, we investigate the moderating effect of the founder"s experience in the related industry before starting a venture, since the founder accumulates the necessary human network and knowledge through experience. For empirical analysis, this study examines 1,065 ventures in the early stage. As a result, the level of firm competence of a venture has a positive effect on early internationalization, and as the scope of external collaboration of the venture increases, the relationship between firm competence and the likelihood of early internationalization weakens. However, if the founder has much experience in related industries before starting the venture, the negative interaction effect between external collaboration and firm competence on the early internationalization weakens.
