Part One - At the start of the interview Professor Holland, epidemiologist, discusses his family background and early years in Czechoslovakia, and his education in England after emigrating in 1938. A state scholarship funded his medical studies at St Thomas', where he studied for a BSc in Physiology in addition to his clinical training. He speaks of the influence of the professor of medicine Sharpey-Schafer and others on the team. Next, Professor Holland reflects on his two years of national service in the Royal Air Force following his first house jobs. He spent most of this time at Colindale, where he was involved in developing a system of surveillance for Asian flu, and gained epidemiological experience working with Corbett McDonald on respiratory infection. On returning to civilian life he was appointed as a lecturer in medicine at St Thomas' and decided to specialise in epidemiology. Professor Holland then goes on to outline his early career in epidemiology. He speaks of his two years as an MRC clinical research fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from 1959 to 1961, where he worked with Donald Reid, Archie Cochrane, and Austin Bradford Hill, followed by a year at Johns Hopkins University in the USA. On his return to St Thomas' in 1962 he was appointed senior lecturer in clinical epidemiology and social medicine. At the end of the interview Professor Holland starts to discuss his work on medical records.
