본 연구는 한국 대학생들이 부모의 기대에 대해 어떻게 경험하고 반응하는지를 탐색하고 이해하고자 하였다. 성인 진입기에 대학생이 인식하는 부모기대와 이에 따른 심리적 적응을 탐색하기 위하여, 서울 소재 6개 대학의 5학기 이상에 재학 중인 대학생을 연구 참여자로 모집하였다. 설문에 응답한 103명의 대학생 중 부모기대부응척도로 부모기대에 부응하지 못 하고 있는 하위 30%를 선별한 후, 삶 만족척도 수준이 높은 사람들과 낮은 사람들로 각각 8명씩 총 16명을 인터뷰 대상자로 선정하였다. 참여자들의 부모기대에 대한 인식과 경험을 탐색하기 위하여 합의적 질적 연구방법을 사용하였으며, 반구조화된 형식으로 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 최종적으로 ‘부모의 기대’, ‘부모의 태도와 표현방식’, ‘부모의 기대로 인한 영향과 반응’, ‘부모의 기대에 대한 대처방식’의 4개 영역과 26개 범주가 도출되었다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 한국 문화 맥락에서 성인 진입기에 나타나는 부모-자녀 관계에서의 심리적 적응 방안 및 시사점을 논의하였다.
The presented study aimed to understand how South Korean college students in emerging adulthood perceive, experience, and react to parental expectations. Participants included university students in their 5th semester, or beyond, from Seoul, Korea. Among the 103 survey respondents who completed the Living up to Parental Expectation Inventory, those perceived they were not living up to parental expectation (lower 30%) were selected as potential interviewees. Then, using scores from the Satisfaction With Life Scale, 8 participants from the low and high life satisfaction groups respectively, were selected for the semi-structured interview and the Consensual Qualitative Research method was used to explore each participants’ experience of parental expectations. As a result, 4 domains (Parental Expectations, Parental Attitudes and Modes of Expression, Impacts and Reactions, and Coping Strategies) and 26 categories emerged. Based on the results of this study, implications for assisting with the psychological adjustment process and parent-child relationships of South Korean university students are discussed.
