Imaging in the neonatal ICU: respiratory distress syndrome

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and transient tachypnea (TTN) are the most common causes of respiratory distress in term and preterm newborn infants and a correct diagnosis is fundamental because the therapeutic strategies of these pathologies are extremely different. The diagnosis of RDS and TTN is historically based on the clinical classification and on the bedside chest radiography, although these pathologic entities often show blurred and overlapping radiographic pattern. For this reason, in the latest years pulmonary ultrasound is emerging as a useful diagnostic tool to integrate the radiographic investigation, both for a correct differential, and also for follow-up of these pathologic entities, thus allowing a reduction of radiation exposure in this category of patients.
