Evaluation of the soothing effect of Eupilen® topical formulation on radiotherapy-induced dermatitis

BACKGROUND: Eupilen® is a topical formulation containing a blend of natural active ingredients specifically combined to counteract sensitive skin discomfort. In this pilot study, we assessed the efficacy and safety of Eupilen® topical formulation as soothing and lenitive agent in patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer treatment.
METHODS: We enrolled patients treated with radiation therapy for different types of cancer. All study participants freely decided to follow either a standard management (SM) protocol, consisting in the application of dexpanthenol, or SM associated with Eupilen® topical formulation (N.=19 for each group).
RESULTS: Patients treated with Eupilen® reported a consistent beneficial effect in the reduction of several radiation-induced skin damages. After 4 weeks, patients treated with Eupilen® + SM reported a marked decrease in occurrence of skin redness, skin peeling, edema and local pain associated with radiation therapy, with superior results compared to patients treated with SM alone.
CONCLUSIONS: This pilot investigation suggests that Eupilen® topical formulation may help reduce skin redness, skin peeling and others symptoms of radiation-induced skin toxicity in patients treated for cancer.
