Abstract
Oesophageal surgery is performed infrequently in dogs and cats, although there are a number of well defined indications. This chapter covers functional anatomy, surgical approaches and principles, indications for oesophageal surgery, oesophageal foreign bodies, oesophageal stricture, and intra- and postoperative management of oesophageal surgical cases.

Oesophagotomy. (a) The caudal thoracic oesophagus is approached via an intercostal thoracotomy and a longitudinal incision is made into the oesophagus. A 5-year-old Yorkshire Terrier had been observed swallowing a fish with the fishhook and line attached. An attempt had been made to remove the fishhook by applying traction to the fishing line. (a) Lateral thoracic radiograph showing the fishhook lodged in the cranial thoracic oesophagus. Endoscopic retrieval of the fishhook was unsuccessful. (b) A cranial sternotomy revealed a large haematoma and the barb of the fishhook protruding from the oesophagus. The fishhook (c) was removed and the lacerated left subclavian vein ligated.

Oesophageal stricture. Lateral thoracic radiograph of a 6-year-old mixed breed dog that had started regurgitating 1 week after ovariohysterectomy. The radiograph was obtained 30 minutes after administration of a barium meal and demonstrates a caudal oesophageal stricture.
