- Abstract
Low-dose radiography can be achieved with flying x-ray spot scanning. An apparatus named 'LISAR', for Low-Intensity Scanning Apparatus for Radiography, was designed and built for the purpose of producing low-dose radiographs. The x-ray photon detection system uses a sodium iodide (thallium activated) crystal coupled to a photomultiplier tube resulting in an x-ray photon detection efficiency near 100%. Radiographs have been produced where the radiation dose given to the subject was as low as 6 urad. This thesis describes the theory and application of flying-spot scanning to low-dose radiography and the design of the LISAR.
