Abstract
Forgiveness and Exoneration – An Intergenerational Therapeutic Resource
The purpose of this article is to focus on a specific aspect of forgiveness and exoneration, which is their effect on intergenerational relationships. This will be done from the perspective of contextual therapy, an approach founded by Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy, one of the pioneers of family therapy. Forgiveness and exoneration are closely related terms. Both pertain to the act of letting go of a claim against a wrongdoer. But what separates them is that forgiveness does not require a reassessment of the degree of culpability of the wrongdoer while exoneration by definition can only occur as a result of such a reassessment. In contextual therapy exoneration is seen as a more important than forgiveness. In this article, I will focus on the process of exoneration that pertains to adult children who try to exonerate parents and other relatives who have been exploitative or destructive with a special focus on parentification as a source of injustices. I will not discuss the issue of forgiveness or exoneration of people who are not part of the family.
