Abstract

In this monograph we used the earthquake occured on February 27th 2010 as an experiment in order to understand which are the elements that cause a degree of social contract breakdown measured through lootings that took place days after the quake. We built a database with information from communes belonging to areas that were most affected by the quake together with socioeconomic and social capital variables and also variables regarding the shock itself. We found out that the most significant variables which help to understand thefts and lootings after the earthquake are poverty, minor damages on housings caused by the quake and also social capital measures adopted by communes. Although the damages caused by the earthquake are useful to explain lootings, these are not documented in our data as a necessary condition for this phenomenon to take place.
