세월호 참사 이후 우리는 보다 안전하고 행복한 사회를 만들기 위해 학교 안전교육 강화에 매진해 오고 있다. 그러나 교육 대상인 학생들에 대한 올바른 이해의 토대 위에서 이치에 맞고 타당하게 이루 어지는 안전교육은 이제 시작 단계에 놓여 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이 연구는 바로 이러한 문제의 식에 터하여 초등학교 안전교육의 합리적이고 체계적인 수행을 위해 학령기 아동들의 발달 특성과 위 험 행동에 대해 탐구하고 그 토대 위에서 바람직한 초등 안전교육의 지도 방안을 강구, 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있었다. 이를 위해 먼저 학령기 아동들의 발달 특성을 신체적, 인지적, 사회정서적 측면으로 나눠 살펴보고, 이어 이들의 위험 행동 요인을 개인적 측면과 가정 및 부모 요인 측면, 그리고 사회적 ㆍ상황적 요인 측면에서 각각 고찰하였다. 나아가 이러한 탐구를 바탕으로 초등 안전교육의 지도 방안 으로서 몇 가지 점들에 대해 논의하였다. 먼저, 무엇을 해야 할 것인가와 관련하여 안전 감수성의 증 대, 안전과 관련된 지적 기반 및 사고ㆍ판단과 의사결정력의 증진, 그리고 안전 생활의 행위 기능과 실 천 능력 및 바람직한 가치ㆍ태도의 함양 등을 제시하였다. 다음, 초등 안전교육의 지도 방법과 관련해 서 실천체험과 실습 등을 통한 안전 학습을 중심 원리로 해서 행동으로부터 개념으로의 발전, 활동적 이고 구체적인 학습, 실제 상황과 맥락의 중시, 안전 학습 과정에서의 상호작용 등에 관해 논의하였다. 나아가, 아동기의 특수성을 고려한 안전교육 접근의 측면에서 아동기의 인지능력 한계의 극복, 위험 취약성 인식 능력의 제고, 충동성 등의 조절 및 통제 능력과 내면의 힘 증대 등을 강조하였다. 끝으로, 안전교육이 잘못 시행될 경우 자칫 두려움과 공포만을 강조하여 소극적, 무기력한 아동들을 길러낼 위 험이 있음을 지적하고. 진정한 안전교육은 현명하고 지혜로운 안전 주체를 길러내는 합리적인 안전교 육이 되어야 한다는 견해를 피력하였다.
We have strived to practice very strong safety education to make safer and happier society after the Sewol ferry disaster all over the country. But the reasonable safety education based on the proper understanding of school students is in the beginning stage so far. So, in this study, I wanted to inquire the characteristics and risk behaviors of elementary school children and suggest some desirable ideas of elementary safety education. For achieving this purpose, I examined the developmental characteristics of elementary schoolers on the three sides of physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development and investigated the meaning and implication for elementary safety education. In addition, I inquired the concept and types of risk behavior, and discussed the factors of risk behavior from three sides of individual characteristics, family-parental style, and social-situational conditions. Furthermore, I argued and suggested some ideas about the improvement, principles, and methods of elementary safety education. In short, it is as follows. Firstly, we need to develop safety sensitivity and integrated safety competences in our growing next generations because they are the initial and fundamental power of safety behaviors that are essential elements for our safety life. Secondly, in terms of teaching methods, we need to apply the principles of action learning, repetitive practice, and children`s interaction, and so on. Lastly, we have to try to overcome children`s cognitive limitations and increase their awareness of vulnerability and ability of self-control.
