Whether respiratory form of rotavirus infection possible?

The objective. Analysis of specific lesion of the respiratory tract in rotavirus infection in children (RVI).

Patients and methods. The study included data of clinical observation of 460 patients aged 1 month to 14 years diagnosed with RVI, of them 52 patients (group 1) had the only supposed source of infection – contact with a individual ill with acute respiratory infection (ARI). The second group comprised contact patients from families of children of the first group who had symptoms of lesion of the upper respiratory tract, absence of lesion of GIT, negative findings of testing for respiratory infections by methods of ELISA and PCR. We assessed epidemiological, clinical and laboratory examinations of all patients. 

Results. Analysis of the epidemiological data of patients with rotavirus gastroenteritis has shown that an epidemiological history of contact with an individual ill with ARI results in the development of RVI, predominantly mild, characterized by catarrhal signs, with febrile reaction at the onset. We can suppose that in this case the source of infection had a respiratory form of RVI. More detailed examination of patients hospitalized with RVI and individuals with whom they had contact (mainly in families) demonstrated that patients with clinical manifestations of ARI (rhinitis, laryngitis, hyperaemia of the oropharyngeal mucosa) had a rotavirus antigen found in faeces, whereas tests for other causative agents of respiratory infections were negative.

Conclusion. The study permits to single out a particular form of RVI – respiratory, which is characterized by moderate rhinitis, laryngotracheitis and hyperaemia of the oropharyngeal mucosa.
