THE INTEGRATION OF CORPUS-BASED APPROACH WITH EFL ACADEMIC WRITING IN THE SAUDI CONTEXT2021 •
Article History This study aims to identify the role of integrating technology in enhancing the use of language. The impact of utilizing the corpus-based approach (CA) on EFL learners' academic writing is investigated; highlighting the effects of this integration on L2 learning and writing approaches. The competence development in EFL academic writing skills is asserted by tackling the contextual factors that influence corpus integration. This qualitative study is based on (10) case studies on non-native students in EFL academic writing courses. The corpus approach in this study was implemented during the fourth year of their English undergraduate program in the first semester of the academic year 2019/2020. Five different instruments were used to achieve the study purposes. The findings indicate the positive effect of incorporating corpus and its use in EFL students' academic writing development and language awareness. The lexico-grammar integration has also been promoted significantly. The corpus-based approach enables participants to solve the problems they encountered while writing independently. Students also gain more confidence and become more autonomous and independent EFL writers. In this study attention is drawn to the participants' language and learning background experience as factors that can shape the students' progress and success in corpus implementation. The distinctive role of general corpora in association with the development of the academic writing skills is further highlighted. It is hoped that that the current study will reinforce the tendency of incorporating grammatical language aspects such as collocations and phrasal verbs in the writing pedagogy process. Contribution/ Originality: This study signifies the connection between teaching practices and technology integration approaches, which can be challenging, especially in the Arab region context where corpus linguistics is not a widely researched topic. Furthermore, since the study highlights individual students' experience, it deepens the understanding of integrating corpus approach in EFL contexts, in particular tertiary education.

DEVELOPING EFL CREATIVE WRITING WITH THE HELP OF COLLOCATIONS AN ENGLISH NEWSPAPERS CORPUS PERSPECTIVE2021 •
Over the past few decades, there has been a considerable shift in learning English as a foreign language, from single lexical items to phraseology. Studies on collocations have recently come out as one of the core areas in EFL context. As a result, it is also one of the problematic areas for EFL learners. Mishandling of collocation obstruct the free use of the target language. EFL creative writing has always been a challenging task for the learners. Their creativity in the target language is often hampered due to dearth of inappropriate handling of lexical combinations. According to Cooze (2006), EFL learners commit a lot of errors like the misuse of vocabulary, lexical choices, translation, rules of grammar etc. Significant in this regard are the errors that result due to being unfamiliar with the lexical collocations that help in building creative writing of the EFL learners. The purpose of the undertaken study is to build up the creative writing of L2 learners through collocations, retrieved from English newspapers. In this regard, a corpus of Pakistani English has been compiled from the leading newspapers to retrieve various combinations of English collocations as the actual usage of words in a real setting can give us the exact description of collocated words. Such awareness into language learning is useful and provides information in a critical situation in language use for successful handing of materials for creative writing.

Digital Age and Reading habits: Empirical Evidence from Pakistani Engineering University2021 •
The development of technology has transformed the lifestyle of the people at the global level. With technological development, the social networking sites and apps have also developed a lot. That has brought a significant transformation in the methods of communication. Various studies have been conducted to identify their impacts on the reading habits of the individuals/ students. The study aimed to explore the application of the technology and social networking sites by the students of Pakistan. This study adopted a mixed- methods research approach. The data was collected from the first-year undergraduate students of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Sindh Pakistan. For the quantitative analysis, the descriptive statistics were applied including 366 students (male and female), 281 were male students and 85 female students. The qualitative data was conducted with 20 students and the responses were examined through content analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of students had prior access to smartphones than desktops, laptops and tablets. However, some students had no internet experience. For academic reading, most of the students preferred electronic books and there was no preference of formats for leisure reading. Most of the students use Social Networking sites for fun. Additionally, the findings also suggested the problems faced by the students related to searching online reading TESOL International Journal Volume 16 Issue 1 2021 TESOL International Journal Volume 16 Issue 1 | ISSN: 2094-3938 materials due to lack of technical skills. The findings of this study may help to understand the students’ reading habits and preferences in terms of using technology. Field Dependent vs. Field Independent EFL Learners' Perceptions of Their Instructors' Teaching Methods in English Language Classes2021 •
Teachers are the core component of teaching and learning a second or foreign language; therefore, they should know what the learners consider as the most effective teachers' characteristics which may enhance their learning. Accordingly, the main aim of the present study was to compare field dependent and field independent Iranian learners in terms of their perceptions about effective language teaching. Fifty intermediate Iranian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) participated in this study and three instruments were utilized to collect the data. The first instrument was Oxford Placement Test (OPT, 2001) to test the homogeneity of the EFL learners. The second instrument was Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) to classify field dependent learners from field independent ones and the third instrument was an effective EFL teaching questionnaire to record the participants' perceptions of effective EFL teaching. The obtained results revealed that field dependent and field independent learners had different expectations in class. That is, for field dependent learners, confidence and open-mindedness in class were important characteristics of an effective teacher while for field independent learners, teachers' knowledge and proficiency were important. Indeed, there was no significant difference between the perceptions of field dependent participants and the field independent EFL learners about the overall characteristics of an effective teacher. Knowing EFL learners' cognitive styles can open new insights in the second language (L2) domain and lead to more influential teaching.

EFL Students' Difficulties with Lexical and Syntactic Features of News Headlines and News Stories2021 •
.Sixty-eight undergraduate translation students received direct instruction in the features of news headlines and news stories. A week later, they took a test that required them to identify the syntactic and lexical features of a sample of news headlines and news stories, supply deleted word, and substitute punctuation marks, infinitives, and block language by their meanings. Results showed that 75% of the subjects could identify initials, 72% recognized surnames and infinitives used instead of the „future‟, 51% recognized deleted articles, 49% identified block language, 21% identified passive without agent, 19% recognized instances were verb “to be” was deleted, and 6% identified ellipted words. Incorrect responses revealed syntactic and semantic/lexical problems, lack of knowledge of current world events, and insufficient ability to apply features of newspaper language to news headlines and news stories unseen before. To help students read and comprehend news headlines and news stories, pedagogical implications are given.

Facebook Games for English Language Learning: What Student-Teachers Say2021 •
This exploratory case study aimed at investigating the student-teachers' views on using Facebook games for language learning. The participants were 48 student-teachers at the EFL Department of the Faculty of Education at a Libyan public university. They were required to play Facebook games for two weeks and then present their experiences through oral presentations and reflective journals. Data were collected through student-teachers' presentations and reflective journals. Data were analyzed qualitatively using a thematic inductive approach. Although few student-teachers had negative views, most of the student-teachers had positive views on using Facebook games for learning. They believed that Facebook games teach players following instructions and provide opportunities for language improvement, especially for vocabulary learning. We expect that our findings would provide teachers and practitioners with ideas for classroom research and encourage researchers to conduct further and more rigorous testing on integrating Facebook games into the EFL classroom.
