일상에서 창조되고 유포되는 소문 서사는 대중의 혼란을 유발하는 매체보도, 비윤리적이고 의도적인 루머나 험담, 시중에 떠도는 이야기의 형태로 소설과 결합하여 재탄생한다. 본 연구는 이러한 소문의 서사가 빈번히 소설을 통어하는 박완서 소설을 대상으로 한다. 연속적으로 진행될 본 연구는 ‘텍스트인 소문-창작자인 주체/대상인 타자- 수용 및 저항 정동의 공동체’의 세 층위를 설정하고 그 중에서 우선 텍스트인 소문과 창작자의 관계 탐색을 목표로 한다. 특히 본 연구는 소문의 발생과 유포 단계에서 기층 대중의 무의식적 심리에 착종된 불안의 양상과 소문서사의 발현 과정을 고찰한다. 이 과정에서 본고는 소문서사에 의해 반영되는 사회 메커니즘과 인물의 수행적 특징 및 길항 관계를 검토하면서 박완서 소설 연구의 새로운 방법론을 제안한다.
박완서 소설에서 국민개조를 위한 감정의 기획에 복무하던 70년대 관변잡지나 혼란과 공포를 조장하던 80년대 미디어 전략은 제도적 채널이 소문의 서사로 이데올로기화되어 주체의 일상에 편재함을 의미한다. 일상에 잔존한 주체의 습속은 근대적 미디어 기획과 마찰하며 전근대성으로 규정되는 과정에서 도태되지 않기 위한 주체의 불안은 배가된다. 완벽한 대타자를 향해 스스로를 균열의 소문으로 전시하거나 비윤리적인 낙인에 앞서 상상적인 소문의 생성으로 죄책감을 은폐하려는 주체의 도착적 수행은 불안을 제거하기 위한 시도이지만 실패로 귀결된다.
집단 내부에서 공유되는 소문의 서사 속에서 계급적인 불안정성과 신분상승의 제약, 권력을 향한 욕망, 상징적인 권위의 상실은 현실의 자유와 선택에 대한 책임을 모두 개인에게 전가하며 불안을 유발한다. 박완서는 소문을 발생시키고 공유하는 집단과 그들의 욕망이 투사된 대상 사이에 작가 의식과 밀착된 중개적 인물을 설정한다. 그들은 비합리적· 비윤리적 소문의 확장을 중재하고 소문 발생 집단과 거리감을 두면서 독자의 신뢰감을 높인다. 소문을 생성· 공유하면서도 그것에 지배받는 주체는 일상의 불안에서 완전히 자유로울 수 없지만 끊임없이 벗어나려 시도하는 아이러니함으로 소문의 서사를 추동한다. 이렇듯 박완서 소설은 소문의 배경을 의심하고 소문의 진위를 파악하는 길항 과정에서 사회적 균열의 필요성을 상기시키며 불화의 건강성에 대해 재사유하게 한다.

Novel by Wanseo Park makes the narration of rumors by combining the media herald instigating the public, intentional rumor for the moral belittlement, and rumors widely talked about. The purpose of this study is to set three layers: rumor which is the text, Subject who is the creator/ Other who is the victim, community of acceptance and resistance affect, and to explore the relationship between the rumor which is text and the creator.
The rumor is composed of the ‘occurrence’ including the incubation period, ‘distribution’ that all classes of society can be the subject, and exercise of violence that changes abruptly to the form of social ‘behavior’. In this study, the aspect of anxiety combined with the people’s unconscious psychology and the progress process of the rumor narration are considered in the stages of occurrence and distribution of the rumor. The rumor is a process of purification that emancipates the subject’s anxiety and has the double-sidedness that intensifies the anxiety.
The rumor strategy by media which planed the emotion to renovate people in 1970s and made the confusion and fear in 1980s shows the social mechanism seizes the subject’s daily life by becoming the ideology. The convention of the subject remaining in the daily life is defined as the pre-modernism as colliding with the modern media plan. At this time, the subject which worries about falling behind collapses before the perfect pinch hitter or makes the imaginary rumor before being stigmatized unethically to conceal the past. The paraphilic performance of this subject is the attempt to remove the anxiety but it fails.
The narration of rumor shared inside the group is made because of the hierarchical instability, restriction of status rise, desire for the power, and anxiety caused by the loss of symbolic authority. Wanseo Park sets a mediation figure who conveys the author’s consciousness between the group triggering and sharing the rumor and the target in which their desire is reflected. They raise the reader’s credibility as mediating the spread of the unreasonable and unethical rumor and keeping their distance from the rumor-causing group. Like this, the subject of anxiety that makes and distributes the rumor narration of the Wanseo Park’s novel structures the powerful meaning of the everyday life where the common sense and senselessness coexist.
