Abstract

Individual Psychology is the psychology to help people to be healthy and to be supportive and cooperative to others in a clinical setting. It consists of the following basic assumptions, such as "Holism", "Teleology", "Fictionalism", "Social embeddedness", and "Creativity". We are separate from the determinists and the schools that are trying to understand humans by extending animal experimentation. We also try to understand a human as a human being and with a unique spirit. They are not a machine or an animal. The theory is not a hypothesis-verifying natural scientific theory, but a hypothetical system. It is not the pursuit of so-called truth, but only one way of interpretation. In order to live healthy, especially in order to live psychologically healthy, the relationship with others must be good and in order to maintain good relationships with others, we must have interested in others interests and we must decide to contribute to others. Such sense of interest and contribution to others is called "Social Interest" and this concept is the important philosophy of Individual Psychology. Also, because of this philosophy, Individual Psychology is not science itself. The techniques of Individual Psychology include "goal alignment", "interpretation and guessing", "identify a problem", "providing alternatives", "encouragement", and "lifestyle assessment". However, many Adlerian therapists consider psychotherapy techniques to be a shared property beyond the schools and they are eclectic. It is possible and not uncommon to do lifestyle assessment with classical Individual Psychology, or to adopt various treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy and Milton Erickson's family therapy in the context of theory and philosophy of Individual Psychology. Further more, Adlerian psychodrama incorporating traditional Japanese martial art techniques are introduced recent year. In this symposium, I would like to reexamine "natural healing power" and "the possibility of natural healing power" in the context of Individual Psychology.
