Abstract

The integration of genomics into healthcare has expanded exponentially, in part due to the substantial reduction in genomics sequencing costs, from $100,000,000 in 2001 to less than $1,000 in 2021 (National Human Genome Research Institute, 2021). These costs are similar to costs for other medical tests that enable genomic technology and resulting information to be integrated into routine healthcare. Evidence-based clinical applications of genomics now span the entire healthcare continuum from before birth to after death. This chapter provides a brief overview of the current landscape of genomic clinical applications, the ongoing integration of precision health, and the essential elements needed for the implementation of precision health and genomics into a practice.
