Abstract

Bone stress injuries in the foot and ankle are common, particularly in athletes participating in land-based sports. Low risk injuries include anatomical locations of the metatarsals, excluding the base of the second metatarsal and proximal fifth metatarsal. Midfoot injuries to the cuboid and cuneiforms are classified as lower risk. Evaluation of this injury requires knowledge of surface anatomy of the foot, identifying sites of pain, and often, radiographic confirmation. Most injuries will heal with offloading the foot, identifying biological and biomechanical risk factors, and a gradual return to sports and physical activity.
