Abstract

Conflict Resolution Studies (CRS) is a nascent interdisciplinary social science devoted to developing conflict theory and enhancing effective conflict transformation practice. Maximized practical intervention and sustainability of conflict resolution are the goals of this work. It would seem obvious that accurate and useful diagnosis of conflict elements would contribute to effective resolution practice, yet little has been done to narrow the criteria for conflict analysis and its correlation with intervention options. This article explores three intensities of group conflict: Event-Based Conflict, Communicative-Affective Conflict, and Identity-Based Conflict, and articulates diagnostic criteria for each level. Process design elements are used to differentially apply this concept to effective methods of conflict resolution.
