초록

This paper provides an Optimality Theoretic account of suffixal vowel harmony in Korean, with a special focus on the issues of variation and exceptions. The harmony in question induces an alternation between /a/ and /ə/ depending on the final vowel of a stem, but with a substantial amount of variation and exceptions. After conducting a corpus-based study of the predicate forms with /a/- and /ə/-initial suffixes, this paper offers an analysis of the variation and exceptions employing the notions of 'critical cut-off' (Coetzee 2006) and lexically indexed constraints (Pater 2000, 20007). Assuming Agree(x) as the main driving force for harmony, this study shows that the variable occurrences of the harmony are attributed to the Agree constraints ranked below the cut-off, and the exceptions are ascribed to lexically indexed faithfulness and markedness constraints.
