Beginning with this issue of the Demographic Yearbook, the results of population censuses taken in the "1970 decade" (i.e. between 1965 and 1974), are being published. It is anticipated that the next two and possibly the next three, issues of the Demographic Yearbook will also be devoted to this project. It seems of interest, therefore, to present here the recommendations made by the United Nations as to the topics which should be investigated in a population census, together with a preliminary indication of the extent to which countries appear to have followed these recommendations.
