Abstract

Research and Advisory Institute for Field Crop and Grassland Husbandry, Wageningen, Netherlands.

Management of grassland for maximum yield was shown not to be worthwhile, as benefits did not outweigh costs. Using a mathematical model, yield patterns under optimum management were determined for a range of farm situations; these all showed a peak in May and June, indicating that good use was being made of spring growth. Average yields in May and June were 44% (40-50%) of total yield, in July and Aug. 35% (30-40%) and in Sept. and Oct. 21% (17-26%). There were negative correlations between May and June yields and between July and Aug. yields; other correlations were virtually absent. RB.
