Objective |
FEBBE (Fishing Effects on bay of Biscay Benthic Ecosystem) surveys was part of the European BENTHIS project aiming to assess the impacts of bottom trawling on various European marine ecosystems and to develop alternatives to the most harmful practices. Those surveys aimed to study the effects of bottom trawling on Nephrops and burrowing megafauna community in the "Grande Vasière" area of the Bay of Biscay. FEBBE-1 & 2 provided an initial description of the sediments and fauna encountered and their modifications depending on different levels of fishing effort. FEBBE 3 and 4 objectives were to quantify the direct impact of 2 types of fishing gear on the sea bed and to analysze impacts of the "conventional" gear used in Nephrops prawn fisheries as compared to those due to an alternative "Jumper" type gear. |
