초록

This paper reanalyzes the so-called ikan’e of unstressed vowel reduction in Russian. This vowel reduction process reduces the unstressed /i, e/ vowels to [ĭ] after a soft (i.e., palatalized) consonant. At a glance, therefore, it seems to be another type of the decomposition process occurring in Slovene, Upper Sorbian, and Polish. We, however, argue that the ikan’e process cannot be described from the decomposition view for several reasons. We then claim that the ikan’e process is a consequence of the interaction between the palatality of the preceding consonant and the weak quality of the following unstressed vowel. To this end, we employ the feature-geometric account and propose several crucial constraints responsible for the vowel reduction. Finally, invoking the basic premises of the Optimality Theory, we show how the geographical variations of the ikan’e process have occurred in the history of the Slavic languages.
