Abstract:
Natural virus infection of Daphne odora plants induced chlorosis and warped systemic symptoms on their leaves. Daphne can be endangered to several viruses such as Daphne virus S (DVS, Carlavirus), Daphne virus X (DVX, Potexvirus), Daphne virus Y (DVY, Potyvirus), Carnation mottle virus (CaMV, Carmovirus), Cycas necrotic stunt virus (CNSV, Nepovirus), and some other poorly characterized rod-shaped or isometric viruses. Especially, among these viruses, complex infections of DVS and CNSV damage both in quality and in quantity in Korea. DVS-infected plants showed very mild chlorotic spots and/or latent symptom. However, both viruses-infected plants showed severe mosaic and distortion symptom. Also, these infected plants reveal leaf curl, a decrease in flower quantity and inactive growth. Therefore, these symptoms lower in quality of ornamental daphne plant. In this study, isolates of DVS in Korea have difference of nucleotide and amino acid level and is a close relative of Hop latent virus and Aconitum latent virus. Results of this study provide evidence to support the assignment of DVS as a distinct species of the genus Carlavirus. RT-PCR detection methods for the two viruses, DVS and CNSV, have been developed for indexing of daphne plants.
