Abstract:
In Mediterranean greenhouse horticulture cropping systems in southern Spain, shading screens are installed by plant nurseries, research stations, and a few farmers, but are limited to pot plants, cut flowers and plant propagation.
This paper presents comparison of the light environments in greenhouses shaded with ‘encalado’ (whitewash or spraying the covering material with lime) to 40%, 50% and 60% moveable shading screens of a commercial aluminized type (ALUMINET ® ) installed under a modern ‘raspa’ and ‘amagado’ tomato greenhouse in Almeria.
The results suggest that under any of the shading screens the Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density is more uniform than under the whitewash, and also that radiative properties below the whitewash are much more sensitive to weather effects leading to large changes in light transmission.
