| Abstract:
The effect of wind on the performance of Cabernet Franc grapevines has been studied at an exposed site in the Barossa Hills, South Australia. An artificial windbreak (3.5 m high, 70 percent shadecloth) was erected in spring 1986. In the 1986/87 season, sheltered vines had higher pruning weights and longer shoots (both approximately 50 percent higher), higher berry weights and the fruit ripened earlier with higher anthocyanins and phenolics (measured as mg per berry). In the 1987/88 season, the yield of sheltered vines was 13 percent higher, primarily due to better budburst and more bunches per vine: there was no effect on bunch weight, berry weight or time of ripening. | |
