| Abstract:
Fire blight disease of pears was first recorded in Egypt in 1962. The pathogen was isolated from few pear trees in an orchard at Mamal El-Kezaz, Behera Governorate that was subsequently removed in 1966. It seemed that the removal of that orchard had helped in eradicating the disease up to 1981. However, sudden severe outbreaks of fireblight disease on pears took place at Alexandria and Behera Governorates, Egypt during 1982 and 1983 seasons. The present work is to reannounce the occurrence of fire blight in Egypt in an epidemic status. Seventy pathogenic isolates of Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. were obtained from diseased samples collected from different localities within the two governorates. The pathological characters of the isolates as well as their cultural, morphological and physiological characters are in agreement with those known for E. amylovora. | |
