| Abstract:
A mixture of fatty acid esters (Off-Shoot-O) and two experimental compounds, MB25105 and NC9634, were successfully used to stimulate branching in three cultivars of apple and two of pear in the nursery. Treatments which killed the leader shoot tip or severely checked its growth reduced tree height and produced feathers which were more upright in habit than those produced by treatments which only temporarily checked the growth of the leading shoot. Suppression of the growth of low feathers on the freely-feathering cultivar Cox's Orange Pippin resulted in the production of more and longer feathers in the upper part of the tree; hand removal of low feathers or their treatment with the growth controlling agent Amex A-820 were equally effective. | |
