Abstract:
For the third time following surveys for the years 2001 and 2005 Commission II of the International Peat Society (IPS) conducted a survey attempting to collect as reliable data as possible on the amounts of growing media constituents (bulky components) used in 16 major and minor growing media producer countries in the EU. The data collection sheet asked for amounts of peat, other organics, composts, mineral and synthetic constituents, making a split between professional and hobby markets for all constituents used. The collected data are either from official national sources, growing media associations, peat producer associations or expert estimates based on related statistics or straight forward expert estimations. The received data show that there is an increase in the use of certain organic constituents other than peat in some countries. Only a few mineral constituents play a role in growing media for the professional market. Peat remains the overall predominant constituent in the EU. This is also true for countries without domestic peat extraction that rely on peat imports. Peat-free growing media are mainly produced for the hobby market and still play an overall minor role in industrial production of growing media.
