THE EFFECT OF TRAINING SYSTEMS AND PLANTING DENSITY ON GROWTH AND FRUITING OF PLUM TREES GRAFTED ON TWO ROOTSTOCKS

Abstract:
Plum trees of Prunus domestica ‘Dabrowice Prune’ cv. Grafted on seedlings of semidwarf rootstock Wangenheim Prune were planted in spring 1994 at the diverse distances in the row (1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5 and 3.0 m) and trained as spindle or horizontal palmetta system. Plum trees of ‘Cacanska Rodna’, ‘Cacanska Rana’, ‘Cacanska Najbbolja’, ‘Sanctus Hubertus’, ‘Herman’, ‘Valor’, ‘Empress’, ‘Oneida’ and ‘Bluefre’ grafted on Prunus divaricata Led. (Myrobalan seedlings) were planted at the distance 3.5 x 2 m and trained as spindle horizontal palmetta or central axis system. The most interesting results were obtained with ‘Dabrowice Prune’ cv. Dense planting enhanced growth of trees and decreased a little yield per tree but increased tree productivity and yield per hectare greatly. Trees trained as spindle produced higher yield than trees trained as horizontal palmetta. In the fourth year after planting (1997) yield per ha varied from 10,8 to 15,2 t for palmetta trees and from 16,6 to 25,7 t for spindle trees. The highest yields were obtained from the most densely planted plots. Planting density and training system had only a little influence on fruit quality. All the other cultivar in this trial grafted on Myrobalan seedlings produced also high yields especially when trained as central axis system. Interesting observation were gathered concerning their suitability for dense planting and training systems.
