Abstract:
This paper presents results from field trials designed to develop techniques for evaluating the performance of selected male cultivars as pollinizers. We concentrated on ‘Matua’, M56 and ‘Chieftain’ but also used M51, M52 and M121. Flowering shoots on ‘Hayward’ vines were bagged prior to anthesis, and their flowers hand-pollinated at anthesis. Two designs were used, one randomly assigning bagged shoots to pollinizers, the other randomly assigning canes (with all shoots bagged) to pollinizers.

All males tested performed adequately, producing export-grade kiwifruit. However, M56 and ‘Chieftain’ appear to be superior pollinizers, with enhanced fruit-sizing capabilities.
