Abstract:
At harvest, basal plate tissues (including apical bud) of tulip bulbs, of cvs. "Apeldoorn", "Lucky Strike" and "Lustige Witwe", show different free arginine contents.
For the 3 cvs., the arginine contents remain stable or slightly decrease when the bulbs are stored at 0°C while they steadily increase when the bulbs are stored for 1 or 2 weeks at 34°C.
In the case of "Apeldoorn", annual differences in the arginine contents have also been observed.
The increase of arginine content at high temperature takes place simultaneously with a physiological evolution of the bulbs which is expressed in a stronger reaction to a subsequent cold treatment and in the acquisition of the capacity to show a faster flower bud differentiation.
Checking the arginine content of the basal plate tissues of a tulip bulb at harvest could thus give an indication on its physiological state.
