Abstract:
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 3 has severely limited tomato production at Bowen, Queensland.
The dominant gene I-3 conferring resistance to race 3 was transferred from the wild species Lycopersicon pennellii to L. esculentum, and its effect was studied in backcross 5 near-isolines.
Plant-house and field experiments confirmed the presence of I-3 in selected lines and demonstrated very large yield increases attributable to this locus.
A commercial cultivar resistant to this pathogen is now available.
