Abstract:
Symptoms of mycoplasma-like diseases, as pale green little leaves, shortened internodes and stunting, were recently observed in Sicily on Dimorphotheca sinuata and Catharanthus roseus plants.
The former showed also virescence, antholisis and phyllody of flowers.
E.M. has ascertained the occurrence of MLOs in phloematic tissues of symptomatic plants, which were never observed in healthy looking ones.
MLOs have been investigated for their morphology and ultrastructure in thin tissue sections, and their distribution in normal or modified leaf petioles, petals and roots.
No natural spreading of the diseases to contiguous plants has been observed.
Some attempts to graft transmit the observed MLOs to healthy plants have been negative.
