Objective The ESRED5 cruise was the logical follow up to ESRED4 in order to compare the fishing efficiency of two different types of ground cables. On the one hand, one with little or no impact, this being a textile cable which does not touch the ground. In this case, the animals are directed into the trawl by lightweight devices which hand from the textile cable under their own weight. On the other hand, a conventional steel cable in contact with the ground. The trials were run using a simple 25m Vendee-type trawl. The ground rope was particularly well weighted. We also took advantage of the ESRED4 cruise to take additional measurements of the effort of interaction between the otter board shoeplates and the ground. This survey falls under the CPER's 2000-2006 "Physical impact of fishing gear on seabeds" programme.
